Orthodontic treatment will create a healthy smile, which includes a healthy bite and straight teeth. A good bite makes it easier for you to bite, chew and speak. Orthodontic treatment is an ongoing process that can take 12-24 months to complete, depending on the severity of malocclusion. The patient will need to visit the orthodontist monthly to have his/her braces checked and adjusted by the orthodontist. The treatment can cause some discomfort as the teeth start to move. We advise the patient to take any over-the-counter pain medication such as Tylenol to relieve the discomfort after the initial application of braces, and as needed after the monthly adjustments.
Completed orthodontic treatment does not guarantee perfectly straight teeth for the rest of your life. Teeth have a memory and often try to move back to their original positions. Your orthodontists will make a set of retainers or permanent ones, which will be bonded on the back side of your teeth. Retainers are required to keep your teeth in their new positions. Regular retainer wear is highly recommended as your body is continually undergoing growth and changing. Minor irregularities especially the lower front teeth may occur even with good retainer wear patients.
